50 Years of Innovation: BMW 3 Series Expands Into the NEUE KLASSE
January 01 2026 - Gary Mollohan

Since its debut in 1975, the BMW 3 Series has become one of the brand’s defining models, with more than 18 million units produced across 18 plants in 13 countries. Munich, Germany, has served as the program’s production hub since inception, pioneering flexible manufacturing through innovations such as overhead conveyor systems and programmable welding technology.

As global demand grew, BMW expanded 3 Series production to additional sites—Rosslyn, South Africa, in 1984 and Spartanburg, USA, in 1994—establishing a worldwide manufacturing footprint and enabling regional supply for key markets.

Today, the seventh-generation 3 Series is built in Munich, Shenyang (China), San Luis Potosí (Mexico), and at regional plants in Chennai (India), Rayong (Thailand), and Araquari (Brazil), supplemented by partner facilities around the world.

BMW is now preparing for the model’s next chapter. Production of a fully electric 3 Series—part of the NEUE KLASSE (or "NEW CLASS")—will begin in Munich in the second half of 2026, followed by additional manufacturing in China and Mexico.
